Our Story

Born 1967, in K.C. Missouri, as William Lewis, my mother and father instilled in me early the Midwestern value of hard work which they set by example.  The first 18 years of my life were made of hard work on a small farm in rural Missouri.  I discovered a Tandy leather store on a shopping trip with my mom one day and when I smelled that distinctive leather aroma, I was hooked.  Weather man or woman, the smell of leather touches our carnal senses, and gives a calming pleasure like grandma’s apple pie.  Every Saturday for the next three years, I attended class and learned from others and became proficient, as a 12-year-old, at western carving.  My passion for leather grew into bags and cases, and I knew I had found my calling.    I don’t know where he is today, but Jim, the manager of that Tandy store, became my mentor, friend and a positive memory.

My college and military career halted my leather carving and designing.  I joined the Army and became Big Lew, a paratrooper, and later, graduated from flight school flying Chinook helicopters.  I spent three tours in Iraq and then in the middle east again as a civilian helicopter pilot after 911.  The patriot in me is still strong today.

In 2010, I realized I still had a passion for leatherwork and began again with a newfound appreciation for working leather.  My love of rodeo, and the hard working, God fearing, family loving people who live that lifestyle, remind me of my father’s horsemanship, and my oldest brothers bare back riding, and are now a part of me.   I am honored to be a sponsor of PRCA Turquoise Circuit Rodeo, Rodeo de Santa Fe, rodeo pageantry, Out of the Woods Horsemanship, and proud to be making quality leather products through Marked Out Leatherworks.
